we see is the safety sensors are not working. All garage door openers installed since 1991 have included a pair of photo eyes located near the floor on each side of the garage doorway. These sensors go by many names; infrared sensors, reverse sensors, safety beams and so on. They all do the same thing. If something obstructs the invisible beam while the door opener is in the closing motion, the opener will stop and reverse to the open position. If these beams are obstructed, misaligned or broken, the door opener will not even start in the close direction.
If you do not have an owner's manual, here are a few suggestions to some common opener problems.

If the spring is not broken, then you can release the door opener from the door by pulling on the manual release (typically red small rope hanging from the opener). This will allow you to open the door by hand. If you can not do this, there may be something much more serious and you should call us for advice or an appointment. 510-657-8700

If the remote transmitter seems to not work to close the door but will open the door, your issue is as described above in the most common repair. As a default, the remote will not work to close a door with an obstructed or misaligned safety sensor. If this is not the issue, then try a new battery in the remote transmitter. Your owner's manual may have additional suggestions.
