Metal or steel garage doors have become the choice for most replacement residential garage doors in recent years. This trend is most associated with a lower cost to produce, install and maintain then the wood garage doors of the past. Steel garage doors have some benefits of design and cost, but can be dented or scratched like any metal or steel product in your home. A basketball hoop in the driveway may not be a good idea if a metal or steel door is your choice. Steel garage doors come in several designs and in a variety of metal thickness. 26 gauge steel sections or panels are considered the standard by most manufacturers and 24 gauge a more heavy duty version. Some Manufacturers take a different approach and use a lighter gauge steel and then build in support to the door construction to give the products some more strength. Be sure to review more information below about insulation, designs and window options.
Steel garage doors can be insulated either during manufacturing or during the installation process. The benefit of an insulated garage door is to minimize the heat and cold transfer while the door is closed. There are two primary types of insulated doors. A "steel back" door is insulated between an outside and an inside layer of steel. This added layer of steel on the inside usually adds some strength to the door and can have some durability benefits too. The second type of insulated door is one that has the insulation material exposed on the inside of the door. Some Manufacturers cover this insulation with a plastic, vinyl or some other material cover. Another benefit is an insulated garage door can lessen the noise associated with the door traveling up and down the metal tracks. Although we feel an insulated garage door is a benefit in most cases, we also believe that comparing the "R" factor of one brand or model to another has little benefit and can obscure your decision during the buying process.
Recently as the demand for steel and metal garage doors has increased, so have the design choices. A savvy shopper can now get a beautiful new garage door unlike anything in their neighborhood for the same price as the "standard panel" garage door. Some of the more common designs are the raised panel doors. These are very common and fit a wide range of architecture designs. A new design becoming popular is the steel carriage house garage doors. These doors are typically 3 sections tall for a 7 foot doorway. They have a wide range of designs and can dramatically change the look of your home. Please review some of our designs in the gallery below.

With the new door designs becoming more popular, so are the new window designs. Windows will add some cost to your door project, but the benefit will be appreciated. Some Manufacturers now offer insulated windows and some even offer a version of simulated stained glass. Windows can be the difference in taking your home from normal to unique.
